Who is Alice?
In 1927, during the second Hotel Ezra Cornell (HEC), Ellsworth Milton (EM) Statler—once skeptical of hospitality education—was so impressed by the program that he famously declared, “Meek can have any damn thing he wants!” His pledge ensured the school’s survival and future growth, though he passed away the following year.
It was his wife, Alice Statler, who carried out and expanded upon his vision. After visiting campus in 1941 and seeing the program’s challenges firsthand, she became a devoted supporter. In 1950, her generosity made possible the 36-room Statler Inn and Statler Hall, giving students an on-campus “teaching hotel” for hands-on learning.
In 1989, The Statler Hotel replaced the Inn, ushering in a new era of hospitality education. Today, the 153-room AAA Four Diamond property stands as Cornell’s premier “hotel that teaches,” a living tribute to both EM and Alice Statler’s enduring impact on the industry.
