Melanie Goricanec ‘23

Student General Manager/ Executive Chef, 2022 & 2023 HLDP Fellow
Melanie Goricanec ‘23

Originally from San Jose, CA, Melanie joined the Statler Hotel Leadership Development Program in the Spring of 2020, after working in the Hotel starting the first week of her freshman year. She joined the program with the goal to eventually be Student Sous Chef, after meeting the students in the program with that role during admitted students' day prior to attending Cornell in 2019.

Since joining the program, she has worked in multiple departments including culinary, meetings and events, and front desk. In the future she will be cross training in the Regent lounge, housekeeping, and shadowing other department heads. Her favorite part of HLDP has been the community, networking opportunities, hotel staff support, and versatility of leadership she has gained through the program. According to Melanie, she has learned a lot since joining the program: "I have learned a lot, but mostly about leadership, teamwork, and time management. I have also learned how to network and put my best self forward at all times. I have also learned how to recover from mistakes. Most importantly, I have learned how to make the most of what I have and to take every opportunity that I can find."

Through HLDP, Melanie has fulfilled her freshman year dream of student Sous Chef and surpassed it by becoming the student General Manager and Executive Chef. Outside of Cornell's campus, she hopes to pursue a career in recipe development or culinary research and development in the catering, events, cruise or resort aspect of the hospitality industry. She also plans to open her own establishment later in her career.

Owen Grisham is a senior Hotelie from Park City, Utah, currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in hospitality management with a minor in real estate development. Owen embarked on his journey at The Statler Hotel in his first semester at Cornell, initially joining the Food and Beverage department. After his tenure at Taverna Banfi, Owen transitioned to the Front Office, where he spent a year and a half honing skills in front desk, reservations and student supervisor. Over four years at Deer Valley, he became immersed in the cohesive spirit shared among its employees. Last summer, Owen enriched his operational knowledge at The Venetian in Las Vegas, solidifying his commitment to on-property operations.

Front Office Manager
Jessica Chang '25

Jessica Chang, a senior in the Hotel School, was born and raised on the island of Oahu, HI. Her passion for the hospitality industry stems from her community, where the "aloha spirit" is a symbol of "welcome". She continues to express this local value through close friendships at work and through providing genuine guest interactions.

Jessica is currently a Student HLDP Front Office Manager. Her journey at the Statler Hotel began in meetings and events in 2021, then to the front office department where in 2022 she cross-trained in housekeeping, and recently joined the revenue management track. Within the HLDP program, Jessica serves as the current Director of Philanthropy and has led the "Everything Drive" initiative, one of the first HLDP service projects since COVID. During past summers, Jessica has interned at the Hilton Corporate Revenue Management Consolidated Center and in the Housekeeping Department at Marriott's Ko'Olina Beach Club. So far, she has learned both on- property operations and has had a taste of the corporate perspective.

Outside of being a Hotelie and the HLDP program, Jessica is an Army ROTC cadet. During her time of being in ROTC, she has held the position of Tri-Service Color Guard Commander, Battalion S5, and Battalion Operations Sergeant Major, and has organized service projects, military balls, and outreach initiatives for the program. Additionally, Jessica is passionate about powerlifting, and you can find her training for the Army Combat Fitness Test in her free time. She believes that ROTC is another development program that helped her become the leader she is today.

Jessica wants to continue her career within the hotel industry and hopefully dive into brand and asset management and see how those standards align with the strong operations background she has. Additionally, she hopes to get into Adjutant General or a Combat Arms branch within the Army Reserves and to travel the world on behalf of both her civilian and military career.

Aston Martin '25

Aston Martin, a junior in food science, was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. Aston was originally pursuing a degree in nursing and dietetics but learned about culinary science through a food fermentation lecture and instantly fell in love, quickly switching career paths. Before even seeing Cornell's campus, Aston applied to work in the culinary department at The Statler Hotel, beginning to work the first day being in Ithaca. While working on the banquets side of the kitchen, Aston learned about the Alliance, a partnership program between the Nolan School and the Culinary Institute of America. They quickly applied to the intensive program to further refine their culinary skills. Upon completion of this program, he sought to further challenge himself and begin working on the Taverna Banfi line at The Statler Hotel. Aston quickly took a liking to the fast-paced environment and excelled. The chefs also took notice to this and advocated for the inclusion of non-Hotel students to be able to apply for HLDP. Many people were supportive of this decision, and he soon became a supervisor for the kitchen. In 2022, Aston spent the summer in Gainesville, Florida, conducting USDA-sponsored research on pastoral food system modeling. The summer 2023 he spent in Ithaca working at The Statler Hotel as a culinary supervisor. He recently signed an internship offer with Ingredion, working on plant-based protein quality and sustainability.
